TOKYO, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- Japan on Wednesday expressed concern over Israel's decision to build 2,610 housing units in Givat Hamatos neighborhood of East Jerusalem, urging the Israeli government to fully freeze the Jewish settlement activities.
"The fact that the Israeli government is still proceeding the plan of settlement construction, at a time when the international community is urging both Israeli and Palestinian sides to resume direct negotiations, goes against the ongoing efforts by the international community to resume the negotiations for peace," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Satoru Sato said in a statement.
"Settlement activities are a breach of international law, and Japan reiterates its strong call to Israel to refrain from any unilateral act that changes the current situation in East Jerusalem and not to approve and implement the above-mentioned plan of construction for the sake of progress of the peace process," Sato added.
Japan does not recognize any act that prejudges the final status of the territories in the pre-1967 borders.
