Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel would not give up the demand that the Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
Speaking to leaders of Jewish organizations and communities in the US, Netanyahu said: "Abbas will not be able to avoid the issue or find clever formulations, and he must say clearly that he recognizes Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people."
Abbas said in response that "Israel is entitled to freely call itself 'Israel - the Jewish-Zionist empire.'"
