Gaza Ministry of Health: “Gaza surgery being performed in corridors, on the floor

Gaza Ministry of Health: “Gaza surgery being performed in corridors, on the floor | International Solidarity Movement 31st July 2014 | Gaza Ministry of Health | Gaza, Occupied Palestine

Gaza hospitals are operating under impossible conditions, with surgery now being performed in corridors and on the floor due to the sheer numbers of wounded from massacres such as Shati park, UNRWA school and Shujeiyah market.

Surgery in the corridors (photo by Gaza Ministry of Health).
Lack of theatre space sees two persons being operated on at a time in the same theatre, while others receive surgical interventions in the corridors.
Even beds are in such short supply that surgeons are forced to undertake complicated procedures while their patients lie on stretchers on the floor.
There is nowhere to send the patients post-operatively, with Shifa ICU full, and no vacant beds in surgical wards. Some surgical cases have been sent to maternity and internal medicine hospitals, and to other hospitals outside Shifa medical complex.
Despite 30 patients being ready for discharge, they literally have nowhere to go. These 30 beds are desperately needed.

Performing surgery on the floor of the corridor (photo by Gaza Ministry of Health).
Wards are full to overflowing, with patients lying on mattresses in the corridors. It has deteriorated to the extent that patients have even been sharing beds, and others are being discharged prematurely.
In many cases no patient notes are being recorded contemporaneously or files created because the staff just cannot take the time away from treating the high volume of patients. Some details are being recorded afterwards, but this is less than ideal.
These conditions are a recipe for disaster.
Infection control is well-nigh impossible, and post-operative complications including death will be inevitable.
Deaths are already occurring from a lack of timely treatment, as the numbers of patients far exceed the capacity of the staff. We estimate that we have a 50% shortfall in staff numbers to deal with the case loads presenting for treatment, resulting in some patients receiving suboptimal care and others receiving none at all.
Current staff are as overburdened as the facilities they serve, working without pay for 24 hours on a day-on, day-off roster. All surgeons and surgical staff have been recalled, to cope with the sheer numbers. They are suffering enormous stress, not only from lack of rest, the horrendous injuries they are dealing with and the under-resourced conditions under which they work, but also due to constant fear for their families, and fear of attack as hospitals have increasingly become targets of Israeli fire.
The Ministry of Health Gaza calls for:
  1. The UN, ICRC and other international NGOs to provide as a matter of urgency safe and hygienic shelters for the discharge of displaced patients to free up desperately-needed hospital beds;
  2. the borders to be opened immediately to enable the entry of urgently-required medical teams and equipment to alleviate the workloads; and
  3. the international community to take immediate and concrete action to reign in the unfettered Israeli war crimes in Gaza.

Israeli settlers storm al-Aqsa Mosque

Israeli settlers storm al-Aqsa Mosque

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- A group of extremist settlers stormed on Thursday al-Aqsa Mosque from Magariba gate under heavy Israeli police protection.
Eyewitnesses told SAFA News Agency that 37 Israeli settlers stormed al-Aqsa Mosque in two groups and conducted provocative tours.
Israeli authorities closed al-Aqsa Mosque gates and prevented women from having access to its plazas and only allowed men over 50 years old in after taking their identity cards.
Only 30 Jerusalemite worshipers are currently inside al-Aqsa Mosque while Israeli invading settlers’ numbers are increasing.
Israeli media outlets have called along the past few days for mass break-ins into al-Aqsa Mosque to mark the anniversary of the alleged Temple’s destruction.
Meanwhile, a number of Jerusalemite institutions called for intensifying Palestinian presence in al-Aqsa Mosque.

37 Palestinian civilians rounded up by IOF in WB, OJ campaign

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- At least 37 Palestinian citizens were rounded up by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) Thursday following a round of mass-abduction campaigns launched throughout different areas of the West Bank and Occupied Jerusalem.
The IOF arrested dozens of Palestinian citizens after having stormed civilians’ homes in Dura, Bani Naim, Beit Ummar, and Beit Kahel among many other neighborhoods in al-Khalil city, local sources told a PIC reporter.
Six more Ramallah youngsters were captured by the IOF invading troops following a series of incursions into Beit Rima, Birzeit, Senjel, and Khirbat Bani Harith.
The IOF broke into the family home of ex-detainee Walid Injas, released in Wafa al-Ahrar prisoner swap deal and exiled to Qatar.
Palestinian youths Mahmoud Qubha and Suleiman al-Azb were also rounded up by the IOF in Jenin.
Human rights sources confirmed that 16 Jerusalemites were captured by Israeli special and intelligence forces for having allegedly partaken in protests denouncing the kidnap and burning alive of Palestinian child Muhammad  Hussein Abu Khudeir.
IOF attacks culminated in a series of arbitrary bullying procedures launched against Shufa’at natives, including punishment for trivial violations, wastewater spray, and abduction campaigns.

Hamas: Netanyahu has only one choice, to meet resistance conditions

GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas Movement said that Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu suffers a real crisis due to the Palestinian resistance’s steadfastness.
Netanyahu has only one choice namely to meet resistance’s conditions, Hamas’s political bureau member Khalil al-Haya said on Thursday.
For his part, Hamas’s senior leader Mahmoud al-Zahhar said that the Palestinian people will soon celebrate the resistance’s victory.
Spokesman for the movement Fawzi Barhum confirmed that Netanyahu risks his army to maintain his political position on the regional and international levels after engaging in a failed war.
US Secretary of State John Kerry revealed Tuesday that Netanyahu suggested a ceasefire initiative that includes the protection of Israel from resistance tunnels.
Kerry revealed that he speaks to Netanyahu over the phone five times daily, and the latter had requested his mediation for achieving a humanitarian ceasefire in one of those calls.

It "means, in other words, we are declaring (Israel) a terrorist state," he said.

The 1972 immigration treaty previously allowed Israelis to travel freely in between Israel and Bolivia without a visa.

The country broke off diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009, over aprevious massacre on Gaza by the Israeli military.

In mid-July of this year, President Morales filed a request with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to prosecute Israel for crimes against humanity.

At least 17 people have been killed and 200 injured.

“This atrocity is barbarity personified,” said Director General, Ministry of Health Dr Medhat Abbas. Not satisfied with exterminating entire families in their own homes, not satisfied with killing people praying in mosques, not satisfied with killing patients, staff and visitors in hospitals, not satisfied with killing ambulance drivers as they retrieve the dead and injured, not satisfied with killing women and children sheltering in UNRWA school, the Israeli death machine now blatantly attacks a crowded public market DURING a humanitarian ceasefire, in an unrivaled cruel and cynical exercise of savagery and barbarism.

The Ministry of Health Gaza condemns this latest atrocity in the strongest possible terms, and considers that any further prevarication by the international community can only be seen as complicity in the increasingly barbaric and clearly genocidal war crimes being visited on the citizenry of Gaza.

The Ministry demands immediate international intervention to bring the rogue ‘state’ of Israel under control, and an immediate end to its carnage in Gaza.
