Jordan expressed hope on Sunday that direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, scheduled to resume in early September in Washington, would end successfully within "months or a year" and lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

"We wish every success for those negotiations," said Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Jawadeh, according to state news agency Petra. (AFP)
