France summons Israeli ambassador over raid that injured diplomat

Paris - The French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned Israel's ambassador to France, Yossi Gal, over an Israeli airstrike on Gaza on Sunday that injured a French diplomat, the ministry announced.

'We reminded Israel's ambassador how much we deplore the consequences of the raid for the head of our consular office in Gaza and for members of his family,' ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said in a statement.

France had also impressed upon Israel the importance of 'avoiding all harm to civilians and to the French presence in Gaza,' he added.

Majdi Shakoura, the French consul to Gaza, told AFP news agency he and his 13-year-old daughter were injured by flying glass after their windows were shattered in the attack on a naval police base north of Gaza City, and that his wife suffered a miscarriage.

The French Foreign Ministry on Tuesday confirmed the incident.

The Israeli attack appeared to be in retaliation for an earlier rocket attack on southern Israel.

A Gaza emergency services spokesman said Monday a police officer was killed and four people were injured in the attack.
