Bid to UN Aims to Restore Palestine on World Map, Says Erekat

RAMALLAH, September 17, 2011 (WAFA) – Fatah Central Committee member, Saeb Erekat, Saturday said that the Palestinian bid to the United Nations is part of the Palestinian strategy to restore Palestine on the world map.

Erekat said that President Mahmoud Abbas is determined to present the Palestinian bid to the UN secretary general on September 23, pointing out that it was not definite how much time the UN Security Council would take to discuss the request.

He said that if the US vetoes the state membership application, it will not hinder our goal because the Palestinian Authority has several other options.

“September 23 is only the beginning,” he said.

Bassam Salhi, head of the Palestinian Peoples’ Party (PPP), said the Palestinians are about to face a fundamental change in the negotiations and the American unilateral role in drawing the Palestinian borders and according to Israeli plans.

He said that Hamas must support the Palestinian bid because the alternative is unserious negotiations with Israel that will not restore Palestinians rights.

Member of the Israeli parliament, Knesset, Ahmad Tibi, said US opposition to the Palestinian move responds to the Israeli expectations.

He held Israel responsible for the consequences of its escalation against the Palestinians and called on the international community to end it.
