Israeli Settlers Attack Palestinian Villages Near Nablus

NABLUS, September 24, 2011 (WAFA) – Armed groups of Israeli settlers from Yitzhar and Bracha Saturday attacked the village of Burin, south of Nablus, setting fire to olive trees and cutting some down, according to village residents.

They said the settlers have escalated their attacks on area villages, destroying agricultural land, cutting down or burning trees and throwing rocks at cars traveling the West Bank roads that pass near the settlements.

Israeli soldiers present in the area do not intervene to stop the settlers, said the residents, but only interfere to protect them if Palestinians attempt to defend themselves against their attacks, as was the case in the village of Qusra on Friday.

Settlers had attacked the village and when the residents came out to defend themselves, Israeli soldiers in the area intervened to kill one Palestinian and injure six others, while arresting two other residents.

Burin residents said soldiers raided the village after the settlers’ attacks and that residents clashed with them, throwing rocks at the soldiers who fired back rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas.
