Denmark will support Palestine if it proposes an upgrade to its status at the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Villy Søvndal says following a meeting with the Palestinian senior negotiator Nabil Sha’ath in Copenhagen.
“Denmark is closely following the Palestinian application for membership of the United Nations. We also, however, fully realise what the result will be if the application is voted on in the U.N. Security Council,” Søvndal says in a statement.
“I have told Sha’ath, that if the Palestinians choose to put a proposal to the U.N. General Assembly on an upgrade to the Palestinian status, Denmark will be among the large group of Nordic and E.U. countries who I expect to vote in favour of the resolution,” the foreign minister says.
He adds nonetheless that it is “important that the parties go back to the negotiating table, which is the only place that a final solution to the conflict can be found”.
Nabil Sha’ath is currently on a round trip to European countries for discussions on the Middle East and to canvas support for Palestinian views.
The foreign ministry communique said that the two men agreed that the ‘many new Israeli announcements of a growth in settlements are unacceptable and pose a serious problem for the possibility of finding a negotiated settlement’.
