Foreign Minister Malki: No Plans to Apply for UN Agencies

RAMALLAH, November 3, 2011 (WAFA) – The Palestinians have no plans to apply for membership in any United Nations agency, said Foreign Minister Riyad Malki on Thursday.

He said that President Mahmoud Abbas has given instructions not to apply for any more UN agencies after gaining UNESCO membership on Monday, rather to focus all attention at getting full membership in the UN.
“Our official position is to only focus at the time being on our bid to win full membership in the UN,” he said. “All other memberships will come automatically after that.”

Malki said the Palestinians started work on getting UNESCO membership 22 years ago and therefore it was not related to the application for UN membership, which came only on September 23.

“After 22 years, we succeeded to get membership in UNESCO,” he said.

Malki said the Security Council will discuss on November 11 an experts report on the Palestinian application for UN membership, stressing that the PA will continue in its efforts until it succeeds in its bid.
