RAMALLAH, November 17, 2011 (WAFA) – Over 26% of Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza Strip lived below the poverty level in 2010, according to a new release by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) published Thursday marking the International Child Day.
It said poverty average among Palestinian households according to patterns of consumption was 21.4% in 2010, divided into 16% in the West Bank and 31.9% in Gaza Strip.
Children who are suffering from poverty form the proportion of 26.9% out of all children, divided into 19% in the West Bank and 38.4% in Gaza Strip.
Poverty among Gaza households who have children was 53.8% of the total poor households who have children compared to 46.2% in the West Bank.
About 65,000 children, or 6% of the average number of children aged 5-14 years, were working children, whether they were paid or unpaid, divided into 8% percent in the West Bank and 3.1% in Gaza Strip.
The PCBS said male children who were engaged in working is higher - 7.7% compared to 4.2% female.
The proportion of children attending school and also engaged in child labor was 5.6% in 2010; 7.5%t in the West Bank and 3% in Gaza Strip, and it was 7.2% among male children attending school compared to 4% among females.
The drop out proportion in the elementary schools for the academic year 2009/2010 was 1% male children compared to 0.7% females. In secondary schools the proportion was 1.9% males compared to 2.1% females.
On the other hand, failed proportion in elementary schools for the year 2009/2010; was 1.8% among males and 1.6% among females. In secondary level, the proportion was 1.2% among males and 1% among females.
A total of 1.5% of the children in Palestinian Territory has disabilities in 2010; 1.6% in the West Bank and 1.4% in Gaza Strip, with 1.8% males and 1.3% female children.
The main cause for disability was congenital with 29.6% percent; 31.4% in the West Bank and 26.5% in Gaza Strip.
The PCBS said 19.4% of children aged 6-59 months in Palestinian Territory suffer from anemia in 2010; 13.4% in the West Bank compared to 25.6% in Gaza Strip.
Infant and children mortality rate was higher among male children than among females.
There are 20.6 death cases among infants for every 1000 births in 2010 in the Palestinian Territory; 18.8% in the West Bank compared to 23% in Gaza Strip. These rates were 23.3 for every 1000 male births and 17.8% females.
Mortality rate among children under five years of age was 25.1 for every 1000 live births in the Palestinian Territory; 22.1% in the West Bank compared to 29.2% in Gaza Strip. These rates were 29.2 for every 1000 births among males compared to 20.9 among females.
Concerning married status for children of the age group 12-17 years, the percentage was for married children 0.9, divided into 1.6% females and 0.2% males. The West Bank was 0.3% for males and 1.2% for females, while in Gaza Strip it was 0.1% for males and 2.1% for females for the same age group.
The number of individuals under the age of 18 years was 2 million, with children forming 48.2% of the total population in the Palestinian Territory for the year 2011; 46.1% in the West Bank and 51.5% in Gaza Strip.
The age structure of Palestinian society in general and children in particular indicates that the Palestinian society is still young where the children under five years form the percentage of 14.7 among the total population residing in the Palestinian Territory, 13.4% for children aged 5-9 years, 12.7% in the age group of 10-14 years and 7.3% in age group 15-17 years.
About 45% of the children less than 18 years of age in the Palestinian Territory come from a refugee family; 28.5% in the West Bank compared to 68.8% in Gaza Strip, said the PCBS.
