Newspaper Review: Israeli Senior Officials Oppose Unity Government, Freedom Committee Meeting

Palestine News & Info Agency - WAFA RAMALLAH, December 26, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic newspapers highlighted Israeli senior officials' statements opposing future negotiations with a unity government, and the Freedom and Political Prisoners Committee meeting on Monday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements that “Israel will not conduct any future negotiations with the Palestinian Authority if Hamas joins its government.”

Al-Ayyam highlighted Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s statements, in which he claimed that President Mahmoud Abbas is not a peace partner and the Palestinians are an obstacle to peace.

He said, “This is not the right time to think that an agreement can be achieved with the Palestinians anytime soon.”

Al-Quds highlighted the Freedom and Political Prisoners Committee meeting on Monday to discuss the release of prisoners held in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and freedom of the press and expression.

Al-Ayyam printed a photo of Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal during Christmas Eve midnight mass at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem.

Pope Benedict XVI called for the resumption of talks between Palestinians and Israelis and the stopping of violence in Syria.
