JERUSALEM, August 1, 2011 (WAFA) - Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu said Monday that President Mahmoud Abbas has taken a strategic decision to go to the UN, and that Israel does not expect him to back down from it.
Netanyahu, who spoke to the committee of foreign affairs and security of the Knesset, said that Abbas will “get what he wants from the UN without negotiations with Israel,” adding that “the Palestinian request will be viewed by the Security Council. We are working on an American veto, but the veto will not stop Palestinians from getting a majority vote in the UN, which will increase Palestinian intransigence, and no Israeli government is willing to accept the Palestinian terms.”
Netanyahu referred to Israeli-American relationships and said, “We are working on preparing a document with the US administration based on some points that President Obama talked about, but the borders will be different from the 1967 ones.”
Netanyahu also spoke about the shooting incident between the Israeli and Lebanese army, saying that the Israeli act was in defense of themselves and their borders. He also commented on this morning’s killing by Israelis of two young Palestinian men in Qalandia, claiming that the Palestinians intended to harm the soldiers.
