BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) – President Mahmoud Abbas opened a regular meeting of the Fatah revolutionary council in Ramallah on Wednesday, party spokesman Azzam Ahmad said.

Ahmad says the latest on the UN bid for membership will be at the top of the agenda.

Also on the agenda are new efforts to resume national dialogue and implement the reconciliation signed in May, "a prerequisite for the Palestinian leadership to complete its efforts to establish an independent state."

Asked about the latest on the unity deal, Ahmad said that "without going into details, after we finish the revolutionary council meeting we will contact Hamas to set dates for two meetings."

The first will be to schedule talks between the movements to discuss implementing the agreement. The other will be between President Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, as in September.

On reports in the Israeli press about a possible US offer to restart talks in exchange for Israel freezing government settlements, the Fatah official said the Palestinian side has received no such offer yet.

But he did confirm that the PA had asked the international Quartet of states to urge Israel to release a group of Palestinian prisoners, as agreed between Abbas and former Israeli premier Ehud Olmert.
