GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas Movement welcomed the decision taken by a majority vote to admit Palestine as a member state in the UNESCO and described this step as a reflection of the declining US influence and role in the world.
Palestine on Monday received full membership in the UNESCO, the UN education, science and culture organization, after 107 of the 173 attending member states voted for it, with 14 against and 52 others abstaining.
The white house, for its part, objected to the move and threatened to stop its donations to the UNESCO.
US state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news conference on Monday that the US would cut off funding for UNESCO following its decision to approve a Palestinian bid for full membership.
Nuland said UNESCO's decision was regrettable and premature, and undermined the possibility to reach a comprehensive, just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
She added the US would refrain from giving the UNESCO 60 million dollars as it was scheduled in November.
