GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli media said on Friday that Kerem Shalom had been declared "military zone" after intense clashes broke out in the area on Friday morning.
Fighting had erupted between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters had erupted southeast of Rafah city near the crossing, Israeli media reported.
Israeli channel 10 reported that mortar shells were being fired at Eshkol while the Kerem Shalom border crossing was closed shut.
The station warned that the clashes may lead to the "collapse" of the humanitarian truce that began at 8:00 a.m. Friday.
The channel’s reporter said that "armed Palestinians attacked Israeli forces in eastern Rafah cty with shells, grenades, and automatic weapons, which led to clashes in the area."
The reporter added that Israeli warplanes "joined" the battle.
Israeli media reported earlier that there was a "serious security incident" in Kerem Shalom area, declaring the area a closed military zone.
An Israeli military spokeswoman did not have information regarding the incident.
