RAMALLAH, November 20, 2011 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday called on US administration to help the Palestinians to implement the agreement signed with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, on the release of the prisoners, especially those detained before the Oslo Accords in 1993, and the U.S. undertaking on this issue.
During his meeting in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William J. Burns and consul general, Daniel Rubinstein, Abbas stressed that Palestine’s quest to gain full membership in the United Nations does not in any way contradict with the peace process nor with the efforts undertaken to resume negotiations.
He added that the Palestinians do not aim to isolate Israeli or delegitimize it, but to confirm the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.
Abbas stressed that resuming negotiations requires the Israeli government to commit to its responsibilities; stop settlement activities, including in East Jerusalem, and accept the two-state solution, which are not Palestinian pre-conditions, but Israel’s obligation in accordance with the road map.
In answer to whether the American administration has threatened the Palestinian Authority concerning the national reconciliation, PLO Executive Committee Member, Saeb Erekat said that all what has been said about American threats in case of carrying out the reconciliation is not true.
He added that Abbas Affirmed that the Palestinian reconciliation is considered a supreme Palestinian interest.Palestine News & Info Agency - WAFA
