UK: Israeli tax hold 'in no one's interests'

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The British Foreign Secretary said Israel's decision on Tuesday to build 2,000 settler homes is a "serious blow" to Middle East Quartet efforts to bring sides back to peace talks.

William Hague called the move "the latest in a series of provocative and unhelpful settlement announcements," in a statement released Wednesday.

Israel's cabinet also announced it will withhold Palestinian tax revenues, a day after UNESCO admitted Palestine as a full member.

Hague warned the cash freeze has "direct implications" for the Palestinian Authority's ability to fund security in the West Bank.

"This is in no one’s interests, least of all Israel’s," he said.

"We need to see steps towards peace, not actions that divide and isolate the parties further and undermine the prospects for negotiations," he added.

Hague called on Israel to reverse both steps.
