Erekat Calls on International Community to Hold Israel Accountable

JERICHO, December 3, 2011 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat Saturday called on the international community to hold Israeli government accountable for its actions and stop treating Israel as a state above the law, according to a statement issued by his office.

Erekat described the Israeli government’s decision to extend the closure of civil society institutions in occupied East Jerusalem, continuation of settlement activities, the de-facto policy, especially in East Jerusalem, as well as the ongoing siege and closure policy, particularly in Gaza, as “continuation on the path to destroy the peace process and efforts to resume negotiations, as well as persistence to eliminate the two-state solution.”

He said after meeting separately with the US and French consuls general in Jerusalem and the Japanese representative to the Palestinian authority that voting for a full United Nations membership of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital is voting in favor of peace and preservation of the two-state solution, as well as a victory for international law and resolutions.

The Palestinian UN membership is the shortest way to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East based on the principle of land-for-peace, added Erekat.
