OCHA: Israeli Forces Injure 9 Palestinians Last Week of November

JERUSALEM, December 3, 2011 (WAFA) – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Palestinian Territory (OCHA) said in its Protection of Civilians weekly report published Saturday that nine Palestinians were injured in clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the West Bank between November 23 and 29.

Most of the Palestinian casualties were sustained during clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians, most in the context of protests against settlement expansion, Barrier construction or demolitions, said OCHA.

It said Israeli settlers stoned Palestinian vehicles driving on a main road in the West Bank, injuring a female passenger. In addition, Israeli settlers, accompanied by their dogs, attacked Palestinian shepherds grazing their sheep; one of the shepherds was bitten by a dog.

Also this week, Israeli settlers cut down six olive trees belonging to the village of Madama near the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

This week, the Israeli authorities demolished 27 Palestinian-owned structures, including 13 residences, a mosque and an electricity generator, in Area C of the West Bank on the pretext of not having Israeli-issued building permits.

The large-scale demolitions displaced around 60 Palestinians and undermined the livelihoods of over 100 others, said the report.

Over the past two weeks, approximately 130 dunums of cultivated land belonging to 100 Palestinian farmers have been bulldozed, and some 500 trees uprooted. Farmers were forced to dismantle nine greenhouses and approximately 7,000 meters of irrigation networks due to the Israeli decision to re-route the Barrier, southwest of Azzun Atma, a village southeast of Qalqilya.

OCHA indicated that the section of the Barrier will isolate some 400 dunums of land that will be located in the closed area between the Barrier and the Green Line, requiring farmers to obtain permits to access the area.

In addition, OCHA reported on another calm week in the Gaza Strip, with no casualties reported.

“However, the Israeli air force launched a number of air strikes inside Gaza, one of which hit an area in Khan Younis, damaging several greenhouses. Also, Palestinian armed factions fired a number of rockets towards southern Israel, causing no casualties or damage to property,” said the report.

Israeli restrictions on Palestinian access to fishing areas beyond three nautical miles from the shore continue to undermine the livelihoods of thousands of people.

The Israeli Navy intercepted Palestinian fishing boats, arresting 13 fishermen and confiscating three boats, which provide a source of income for 150 people. All the fishermen were released as of the end of the reporting period.

The report said that four truckloads of strawberries left Gaza during the week, while Israel’s announcement in February this year that a wider range of exports from Gaza would be permitted, including exports of furniture, textiles and agricultural produce, has remained unimplemented.
