BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Chilean medical team is in the West Bank district of Nablus performing cost-free surgeries for children, in the second trip since November, officials said Friday.
Orthopedic surgeons Nahauff Chamas and Andres Chahin, and anesthesiologist Diego Villegas, are performing the surgeries at Rafidia Hospital focusing on spine, hips, knees and feet.
The orthopedic operations are thanks to an agreement between the Palestine Children’s Relief Organization Fund and the Chilean Society of Pediatric Surgery, with support from the Bethlehem 2000 foundation.
“We are so thankful for the Chilean doctors for the wonderful work they are doing," said Bethlehem 2000 representative Vivian Ghobar. It brings "hope for the families and their children," she said.
Medical cooperation between Chile and Palestine will intensify in 2012, as at least six volunteer medical trips are expected in the coming months, officials said in a statement.
As part of the agreement, Palestinian children continue to arrive in Chile. In one case, Mohammed Kharraz traveled with his mother to be operated on by doctors from Exequiel Gonzales Cortes Hospital in Santiago.
In November 2011 a team of Chilean doctors performed 59 operations at Rafidia Hospital.
