Fatah Affirms Support of UN Move

RAMALLAH, September 18, 2011 (WAFA) – Fatah movement Sunday affirmed its support for President Mahmoud Abbas’ position in going to the United Nations Security Council this week.

Fatah media spokesman Ahmad Assaf said that “Abbas’ position reflects the opinion of the Palestinian majority in Palestine and the Diaspora.”

He said, “Abbas has put an end to all rumors that the Palestinian Authority will not go to the UN Security Council to seek full recognition of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

“The PLO is the only legal representative of the Palestinian people and it will not sacrifice any of their lawful rights such as right of return and independence,” Assaf added.

The Palestinian policy aims to illegalize the Israeli occupation in the West Bank, he said, pointing out that Netanyahu’s government is aware of the Palestinian bid to the UN and its consequences.

“It is not strange that the Israeli government is hysterical regarding going to the UN Security Council,” Assaf said.

In reference to Hamas’ position regarding the Palestinian bid to the UN, Fatah expressed surprise regarding Hamas’ reaction to Abbas’ speech and its bias towards its own interests.

Assaf called on Hamas to put the Palestinian peoples’ interests higher than its own.

On the other hand, Hamas leader Ahmed Yousef expressed his disagreement with Hamas’ position towards the UN bid, preventing any mass activities in support of it.

He called on Hamas to drop its position and not oppose a step that has been approved by the Arab League, Islamic Conference, Turkey and hundreds of countries in the world.

Fatah called on the major countries of the UN to vote for the full membership and recognition of a Palestinian state in the UN council.

Fatah movement’s spokesman in Europe, Jamal Nazzal, said that “voting against the bid might lead to results that deeply affect the forces interested in peace and stability in the region.”
