Haniyeh: Netanyahu speech 'desperate'

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Sunday that Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu's defense of the siege on Gaza was "criminal."

Netanyahu told world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Friday that the Gaza Strip had been taken over by "militant Islam" and that Iran "through its proxy Hamas" had ousted the Palestinian Authority from the coastal enclave.

Haniyeh said in a statement that Netanyahu's speech was "a desperate attempt to transform the historical occupier into the victim."

The Gaza premier added that Netanyahu's "arrogant" speech would not affect global solidarity with the Palestinian people.
