Nine Countries to Vote for Palestinian State in UN, says Shaath

RAMALLAH, September 25, 2011 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee member Nabil Shaath announced Sunday that nine countries will vote for the Palestinian bid to recognize Palestine as a full member in the United Nations Security Council.

He said to Voice of Palestine, “We will interfere against any attempt to hinder our request to the UN,” pointing out that the council will take from five to six days to study the request.

Shaath called on Washington to choose between the Jewish lobby or its interests in the Arab region when voting at the UN security council.

In reference to the Quartet’s and French suggestions, he said the Palestinian Authority cannot accept any initiatives that do not include freezing settlement activities.

“The PA is willing to seriously consider any suggestions as long as they include freezing settlement activities and establishing a state based on 1967 borders,” he said.

He added that the next stage will witness clashes with more than one side, saying that “the PA will not accept a selective implementation of the Oslo accords.”

“The Paris Economic Agreement signed with Israel allows 150,000 Palestinians to work in Israel, yet Israel is hindering the implementation of it,” Shaath said.

He added that the PA will consider trade with Israel, whose exports to the West Bank amount to $2.5 billion a year.
