PASF vows to crack down on ‘unfestive’ gatherings during UN bid

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Palestinian Authority security forces spokesman Adnan al-Damiri has warned those forces would suppress any “unfestive” demonstrations that could take place when an appeal is scheduled to be filed for full Palestinian membership in the United Nations.

In a statement to Wafa news agency, he said that peaceful rallies slated for Friday, as called for by the Fatah party and PA President Mahmoud Abbas, would be characterized by their “festive nature”

Damiri warned against approaching or clashing with Israeli occupation forces, saying: “We will not allow (anyone) to leave the areas under our security control in the form of groups or large demonstrations, and all areas of friction with the occupation forces that are not under Palestinian security control”.

The PASF spokesman added that the Israeli occupation forces had refused to cooperate with the PASF in the face of clashes consequent to the UN bid.

“They are refusing security coordination (with us) and we are in need of protection,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian information center has learned that “pressure” has caused Fatah to publicly back down from an agreement with Hamas that there would be no demonstrations in the Gaza Strip during the application process at the UN.

The parties reached the agreement not allowing demonstrations for or against the UN bid in an attempt to avoid tensions amid mending relations, but Fatah officials soon caved in to pressure from leftist groups and denied the agreement to media, sources told the PIC.

When Hamas asked those officials about denying the agreement, they admitted to being under pressure. When asked about plans to stage demonstrations, the Fatah officials replied that the statements were no more than media remarks.

The sources affirmed that leftist groups in Gaza have been exerting pressure on Fatah and seek to create tension between recently reconciled Hamas and Fatah.
