10 Prisoners Injured in Nafha Prison, Says Ministry of Detainees Affairs

RAMALLAH, December 1, 2011 (WAFA) – Ten prisoners were injured Thursday when Israeli soldiers raided the cells in Nafha prison, in the Naqab desert, and attacked them, according to a statement.

The statement issued by the Ministry of Detainees Affairs stated that a great number of the prison’s guards raided Nafha prison, attacked and beat the prisoners causing ten injuries.

It added that the guards tampered with the contents of the prisoners, cut off the electricity, and imposed punitive measures against them.

The ministry pointed out that these practices come as a continuation of the fierce attack against the prisoners after the right-winged extremist Israeli government gave the green light to the prison’s administration to increase the pressure on the prisoners and tighten the screws, for political gains.

Minister of Detainees and Ex-Detainees, Issa Qaraqe, expressed his anger for what the prisoners are facing from daily attacks by the prison guards, calling on all the negotiators to follow up on ‘Shalit swap deal’ details and the prisoners suffering.

He said that despite the fact that the agreement included an article that states ending the punitive measures imposed on prisoners due to Shalit’s capture, the Israeli administration changed nothing, on the contrary, it imposed additional punishments against prisoners.

Qaraqe warned from leaving the matter to Israel’s execution as “Israel gives no importance to the prisoners.”

He added that serious steps must be taken to end these crimes and attacks, which are practiced on daily bases.

He called on all humanitarian and legal institutions to work on putting pressure on Israel to implement international laws in dealing with the prisoners in its jails.
