GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Palestinian detainees in Israel's Nafha prison said Thursday that they have been mistreated by prison authorities in an attempt to stir up tension before the second phase of a prisoner swap deal.
In a letter to Ma'an, inmates said they were assaulted by guards without explanation, and said electricity in the jail had been out for three days, appealing to human rights groups and the International Red Cross to intervene.
The Gaza-based Hussam Association for Prisoners Affairs said detainees told them televisions had been removed from Nafha cells, heaping pressure on the detainees before the next stage of prisoner releases.
Israel agreed to release 1,027 prisoners in exchange for an Israeli soldier in a deal reached with Hamas in October.
On Oct. 18, 477 prisoners were freed and soldier Gilad Shalit was released. Hamas officials say Israel agreed to release a second group of 550 prisoners within two months from that date.
