RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa al-Barghouthi was injured on Wednesday while taking part in a protest to support Khader Adnan.

The Palestinian MP was hit in the foot by a rubber-coated metal bullet while demonstrating outside Ofer prison in support of hunger striking detainee Khader Adnan.

Israeli forces fired tear gas and sound bombs at demonstrators and broke the glass of an ambulance after firing at hit, he said in a statement.

Barghouthi called on Palestinians to support Adnan and said that Israeli policies will not break the will of prisoners.

The Jihad leader, who was detained from his Jenin-district home on Dec. 17, is protesting his treatment by Israeli prison authorities and the practice of detention without charge.

There are an estimated 307 prisoners in administrative detention, meaning held without charge, in Israeli jails. The practice was started under British mandate rule.
