Red Crescent Expresses Concern over Israeli Targeting of its Teams‏

RAMALLAH, February 15, 2012 (WAFA) – The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Wednesday expressed the uttermost concern over the Israeli occupation targeting of its medical teams and preventing it from conducting its humanitarian duty, according to a statement issued by PRCS.

PRCS condemned the Israeli forces’ targeting of an ambulance, firing rubber bullets at it during a sit-in protest outside Ofer military camp near Ramallah.

The demonstrators were demanding the release of Khader Adnan, the prisoner who has been on hunger strike for 60 straight days, and protesting his arrest and administrative detention without charging him.

It also condemned the Israeli forces attacking of an ambulance and breaking its glass while it was transferring a journalist who was hurt in Al-Issawiya neighborhood in East Jerusalem during confrontations that took place on Tuesday night.

PRCS affirms that such practices constitute a crying violation of key IHL provisions, mainly the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 on the protection of civilians in time of war, which legally applies to the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

They also violate the 1st additional protocol to the four Geneva Conventions as well as article 20 of the Fourth Geneva Convention which guarantee the protection and respect of the personnel engaged in the search for, removal and transporting of and caring for wounded and sick civilians, as well as the respect of human life and dignity in times of military occupation.
