RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with Hamas chief-in-exile Khalid Mashaal on Saturday to discuss the ongoing cross border violence between Gaza and Israel, official news agency Wafa reported.

Abbas also spoke with Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shallah, with the leaders agreeing that an escalation in the violence should be avoided.

They agreed that a truce should be maintained to avoid giving Israel a pretext to continue military operations against the Gaza Strip, Wafa said.

The president had also spoken with officials in Egypt, the European Union and the Middle East Quartet, demanding an end to Israeli aggression against the coastal enclave.

The president held Israel responsible for "the dangerous deterioration as a result of its aggression against our people that include assassinations, incursions and destruction of infrastructure."

Israeli may use the current violence to jeopardize international efforts to revive the peace process, he said.

Eighteen people have been killed in Gaza since Friday, medics say. At least six Israeli have been injured by rocket fire.
