QALQILIYA (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian man was injured by a tear gas canister fired toward him and another was hurt by a rubber bullet in his leg during a demonstration Friday in the West Bank, activists said.
Shaker Eshtewi, 29, was struck in the head with a gas canister in Kafr Qaddum village in the northern West Bank as Israeli forces suppressed a weekly demonstration organized by Fatah.
Palestinians, internationals, and Israeli peace activists participated in the demonstration.
A spokesman for the demonstrators, Murad Eshtewi, said the protest came as a response to the detention of four people from the village in what he said was an attempt to stifle protests.
He called on Palestinian leaders to support the popular resistance and expand it everywhere.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said 50 "rioters" hurled rocks and rolled burning tires toward security forces. She said the security forces used riot dispersal means against the crowd.
An Israeli security official said a border police officer was lightly injured.
Protests in the village are held regularly to protest restrictions on movement and land confiscation for the benefit of the illegal Kedumim settlement, which is near the village.
