Fierce Campaign against ‘Ofer’ Prisoners, Prison’s Administration Sets ‘Tents Section’ for September

Palestine News & Info Agency - WAFA

RAMALLAH, September 20, 2011 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Detainees’ Affairs said on Tuesday that the Palestinian prisoners at Ofer’s prison are suffering from a brutal campaign, carried out by the prison’s administration and Israeli occupation forces against them.

In a statement issued by the ministry, 50 prisoners were transferred from their rooms, after raiding the prison and searching the prison’s cells, in the early morning hours.

It added that the assaults on the prisoners were accompanied by a series of punishment measures, such as denying cell 13 prisoners their break, and banning the canteen, while denying cell 8 prisoners from receiving family visits, in addition to removing the Television and denying the prisoners’ children’s entrance to meet their jailed parents during visits.

The ministry affirmed that the prison’s administration is preparing a “ Tents Section “ in preparation to what looks like a wide detention campaign that the Israeli forces are planning to carry out in wake of the Palestinian move to the United Nations (UN) to obtain full membership of a Palestinian state.

Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa Qaraqe, condemned these procedures saying that ”they come within a wide and programmed campaign against the prisoners’ rights ,” indicating that the Israeli government started escalating its punitive measures against the prisoners and is taking prisons as a revenge field, especially, in light of the Palestinian leadership move.

He called for providing international protection to the prisoners and interfere to stop these dangerous violations against them.
