GAZA, Sept 24 (KUNA) -- Prime Minister of the Palestinian government in Gaza Strip Ismail Haniyeh said Friday the speech made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly last night was "arrogant and aimed to sell a fake story" on the Middle East conflict to the international public opinion.
"It was a desperate attempt to turn the (Israeli) historical occupation into a victim and defend the embargo on Gaza Strip which is the crime of the time," the Hamas leader said in a brief statement distributed here.
"The speech is unlikely to curb the growing international solidarity with the Palestinian people and their fair cause," Haniyeh added.
Netanyahu tried in his address to the 66th session of the UNGA at the UN headquarters in New York to portray Israel as a victim of the Palestinians' rejection of peace.
He started his speech by claiming that "Israel has extended its hand in peace from the moment it was established 63 years ago. On behalf of Israel and the Jewish people, I extend that hand again today--." "So as Israel's prime minister, I didn't come here to win applause. I came here to speak the truth. The truth is that Israel wants peace. The truth is that I want peace. The truth is that in the Middle East at all times, but especially during these turbulent days, peace must be anchored in security," he said.
The Israeli leader reiterated that future Palestinian state should be demilitarized and recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
He accused Hamas of breaching the truce with Israel and violating the international laws through holding the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit as hostage, saying that "Gilad Shalit is the son of every Israeli family."
