GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Ministry of Interior in the Gaza Strip released 159 prisoners on Saturday as a gesture to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, a Ma'an correspondent said.
The release was proposed by Gaza prime minister Ismail Haniyeh and will see 159 prisoners released, 19 granted home leave and a further 72 fast tracked through the court system.
The gesture reflects the humanitarian role of the ministry of the interior, Haniyeh said.
A representative from the ministry of justice told Ma'an that the prisoners would have to enroll in rehabilitation programs and take an oath not to commit more crimes.
In 2011, the Hamas-run ministry of interior in the Gaza Strip released 87 detainees for the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of Ramadan.
