International community must broker a ceasefire: Adams | Sinn Féin
November 16, 2012
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has called on “both sides in the escalating conflict between the Gaza strip and Israel to call an immediate cessation of all armed actions.”
The Sinn Féin leader also called on the United Nations to “directly intervene and urge the Israeli government to immediately stop the aerial bombardment of the Gaza strip, remove its military threat and seek an end to the rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel.”
The Sinn Féin leader said:
“In 2009 I travelled to the Middle East. I spoke to Israeli victims of rocket attacks in the Israeli Trauma Centre in Sderot. I also travelled into Gaza and saw for myself the devastation caused by the Israeli military invasion.
Thousands of civilians were displaced, and over 1400 people, including more than 400 children and over a hundred women were killed.
Every effort must be made to avoid a repeat of this appalling destruction and loss of life.”
