RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Detained Islamic Jihad leader Khader Adnan is in a serious condition and has been transferred from prison to an Israeli hospital, after refusing food for 43 days to protest his treatment in Israeli jail, a prisoners group said Sunday.
Adnan has refused food, salts and medical attention since his detention on Dec. 17. On Sunday the Palestinian prisoners society said it coordinated a meeting between him and Imam Sulaiman Abu Swif from Yaffa in jail, after which he agreed to a medical check.
The Jihad leader has been transferred to the Assaf Harofeh hospital in central Israel.
He is waiting for the arrival of two Palestinian doctors from local body the Human Rights Doctors Assembly at his request, the prisoners society said.
Lawyer with the society Shirin Nasser said Adnan is in a wheelchair as he cannot walk, and vowed to continue his hunger strike until death.
"While we were speaking, Khader began to vomit water mixed with blue greenish acid. His body is rejecting water and he now has memory problems and he sleeps for a long time. His hear beat seems to be really high and he has severe pain in his head" Nasser said.
He blamed the Palestinian leadership for their neglect of his situation and that of other Palestinians.
The prisoners society said Israeli prison authorities had agreed to their request that Adnan be permitted to speak with his family. Adnan had been placed in isolation and forbidden family visits after his hunger strike, prisoners rights group Addameer reported.
He was issued a four-month administrative detention order on Jan. 8, and is protesting mistreatment in jail and the system of detention without charge, Addameer said.
Adnan faces a hearing at an Israeli military court near Ramallah on Monday, the prisoners society is organizing a sit-in at the site to support him.
