Israeli Knesset Passes Law against Boycotting Settlements in West Bank

TEL AVIV, July 12, 2011 (WAFA) – Israeli Knesset Monday passed the “Boycott Law” against boycotts or callings to boycott Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Approved with a 47-38 vote, the new law allows settlers or settlement-based businesses to sue Israelis who promote boycotts of settlements. These Israelis will be subject to legal liability and banned from participating in state bids.
Knesset members of settlers and the extreme right proposed the law in response to what they called “anti-Israel actions,” when Israeli artists and lecturers boycotted settlements and academic institutions in settlements in the West Bank.
Arab Knesset Member, Ahmed Tibi, condemned the “racist” law and called to boycott settlements and settlers despite the law, which undermines the freedom of expression. Israeli Knesset members from the extreme right attacked Tibi and accused him of “supporting the enemies of Israel.”
