Israel Looking into Revoking Oslo Accords

Tel Aviv - PNN - Israel’s National Security Council is looking into the possibility of revoking the Oslo Accords following a vote at the United Nations for a Palestinian state in the West Bank on the 1967 borders.

Such a move would come in response to a resolution at the UN either mandating or recommending the creation of a Palestinian state, which the Palestinian Authority plans to request in September.

Because the United States has made it clear that it would veto such a resolution if presented at the United Nations Security Council, the Palestinian Authority may go directly to the General Assembly, where reports estimate that up to 140 member states would vote in favor of a Palestinian state.

When asked whether the Security Council discussed the possibility of revoking the Oslo Accords, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu answered that the Security Council is studying many options, and will present its findings to the political class when finished.

Ghassan Khatib, head of the Palestinian government Press Office, refused the Israeli threats of revoking the Oslo Accords, signed in 1993 by Israelis and Palestinians, if the Palestinians go to the UN.

During a phone interview with PNN, Khatib explained that the intensions of Palestinians to go to the UN in September supports the attempts to move forward with a fair political solution paved upon international legitimacy.
