The boy was injured when the Israeli air force bombed a tunnel that links Gaza to Egypt. Israel claims these tunnels are used to smuggle weapons into Gaza; these tunnels however are vital to provide medical and other supplies to 1.5 million besieged Gazans.
Hamas confirmed that the first air strike had hit a group of three gunmen who had been firing rockets into Israel; one of the gunmen later died of his injuries.
Four of the airstrikes were against pre-specified targets and were in direct response to homemade Qassam rockets that had been fired into Israel from Gaza against the Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. No injuries were reported from these attacks, and the rockets landed in open space near the city.
The fifth airstrike was against what the Israeli army believed was a group of armed gunmen who had plans to carry out mortar attacks. The army confirmed a direct hit against this target as well as the other four pre-specified targets.
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have escalated in recent weeks, as Israel uses full force to retaliate against homemade rockets fired from Gaza, often injuring individuals, sometimes fatally. The rockets fired from Gaza very rarely cause injury; one of the last injuries reported was when an Israeli damaged their leg running after hearing an air raid siren.
