Fayyad: International powers must intervene to end occupation

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad called on the international community to actively guarantee an end to Israeli occupation and work towards establishing a Palestinian state along 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Fayyad's comments came on Sunday as he received a Japanese delegation in Ramallah headed by special envoy to the Middle East Yutaka Limura.

Fayyad also discussed the latest political developments in the Palestinian territories and briefed the Japanese envoy on the PA's state-building efforts in preparation for the UN bid in September.

In light of financial problems currently affecting the PA, Fayyad noted that “overcoming this crisis requires the donor countries to meet the commitments that are approved to support the budget of the Palestinian Authority to enable it to meet its commitment towards the Palestinians and their needs."

Fayyad praised Japan's commitment to the Palestinian drive for statehood and thanked the government for its economic support for projects in the Jordan Valley.

Limura asserted that Israel must abide by international law in order for there to be peace in the region, noting that Japan will continue to support Palestinian efforts to build state institutions.
