Fatah Accuses Dahlan of Killing Arafat

Ramallah - PNN - Top Fatah leaders released a report on Sunday saying former Gaza security chief Mohammad Dahlan was responsible for poisoning former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Arafat died in a Paris hospital in 2004 in what many call "mysterious circumstances." Many Palestinians believe Israel was behind the killing.

The report also accuses Dahlan of stealing millions of dollars in US aid supposed to be used to help build the Palestinian Authority's security force.

The report offers no real evidence to back-up its claims.

Dahlan lashed out at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas saying the claims were false and that Abbas was clearing Israel of Arafat's murder simply to slander Dahlan.

"If Abbas spent his time preparing for independence instead of fighting me, he would have won," said Dahlan in a telephone interview with Israeli daily Haaretz.

Dahlan has been widely blamed for Fatah's loss of control in the Gaza strip to Hamas during 2007 clashes following Hamas winning the parliamentary elections. Dahlan was the top Fatah official and security chief in Gaza when the party was ousted by the Islamist movement.

In June, Dahlan was kicked out of Fatah and Palestinian Authority police recently raided his home, seizing files, weapons, computers and arresting several of his security guards.
