MOSCOW, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- Russia will vote in favor of recognizing an independent Palestinian state at the General Assembly of the United Nations, a senior official announced.
Head of the Middle East and North Africa Section at the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Vershinin told reporters Tuesday that Russia will support the Palestinians in the UN in order to achieve the recognition of their independent state.
Verhinin said that Russia recognized the Palestinian state in 1988, pointing out the existence of a Palestinian embassy in Moscow.
However, he expressed satisfaction at a recent Palestinian announcement that going to the United Nations is not a substitute for peace negotiations with Israel.
