Spain condemns Israeli decision to build housing units in E. Jerusalem

MADRID, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Spain Monday condemned the Israeli decision to build over 900 housing units in Har Homa settlement in occupied East Jerusalem, and said this move would fuel tension in the region and weaken chances of solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
"East Jerusalem is part of the occupied Palestinian territories and the settlements built over these territories are illegitimate in line with the international law," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It added that building of settlements over occupied Palestinian lands was "a stumbling block on the path to peace." The Israeli measure, said the foreign ministry, would undermine efforts exerted by the international diplomatic Quartet to resume the direct negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians, which would be the sole way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East that would see two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security.
