World Trade Union Backs Palestinian UN Bid

RAMALLAH, August 6, 2011 (WAFA) – The Palestinian people have the right to seek full recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September, Saturday said the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).

WFTU general secretary, George Mavrikos, said in a letter addressed to the secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, that the union, which represents more than 120 million workers in 85 countries around the world, believes that the Palestinians have the right to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The union urged assistance to the Palestinians to establish their state and get international recognition, which should help enhance security and end conflict and instability.

It considered seeking recognition of a Palestinian state after decades of torment and dispersion as a normal thing and a right that the UN must grant.

WFTU demanded that Israel should dismantle the separation wall.

Haidar Ibrahim, secretary of the General Union of Palestinian Workers (GUPW), welcomed WFTU position and said that it was part of support from international unions to enhance and reinforce the Palestinian Authority’s stance in September.
