'Another dead' in Israeli strike on Gaza - The West Australian

RAFAH, Palestinian Territories (AFP) - One Palestinian was killed and another wounded on Sunday in a fresh Israeli raid on Gaza which came just hours after militants declared a ceasefire, medical sources said.

The strike took place near the southern border city of Rafah and raised to 10 the number of Palestinians killed in a sharp escalation of violence which began on Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses named the dead man as Ahmed Jarghun, a militant with the armed wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP). The injured man was also a DFLP militant.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the attack, which struck an area just east of Rafah and came just hours after a truce took hold following hours of deadly tit-for-tat violence which killed nine Palestinians and an Israeli.

Sources in Gaza said the DFLP was one of the groups which had signed up to the Egyptian-brokered truce which went into effect shortly after dawn but there was no immediate response from the group.

Nine of those killed in Israeli air strikes on Saturday were militants from the Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.

An Israeli man also died after he was hit by shrapnel from a rocket which landed in the southern port city of Ashdod, some 30 kilometres (18 miles) up the coast from Gaza.
