Quartet’s Efforts Futile Without Settlements Halt, Says Official

RAMALLAH, October 26, 2011 (WAFA) – Mohammed Ishtayeh, Fatah central committee member, said Wednesday that, “The quartet’s efforts are futile if they cannot stop settlement activities and their recent statement was ambiguous,” according to an official.

Ishtayeh, who is also head of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR), told voice of Palestine radio that the Palestinian leadership will raise a question to the Quartet about its ability to restrain Israel from further continuing its settlement attacks, stressing that in case it cannot, the efforts will go down the drain.

He rejected resuming negotiations without halting completely the settlement activities and determining a clear reference for the peace process.

Regarding if the leadership received an American suggestion on partially and quietly freezing settlement actives in exchange for resuming the negotiations, he said, “The Palestinian leadership was not informed of any suggestions and their stance is clear; utter and complete stop of settlement activities and not freezing them, which are illegal in all their forms.
