Israel transport closes for Jewish holiday

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- All air traffic to and from Israel was stopped late Friday until 9 p.m. Saturday, as Israelis mark the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, Israeli media said.

The Taba crossing to Egypt, in southern Israel, will also reopen at 9 p.m. Saturday, media reported.

All transportation is shut down during the religious holiday. Media reports said trains would resume service after midnight Saturday.

The Israeli army has imposed a closure on the West Bank since midnight Thursday, stopping the passage of Palestinians to Jerusalem, Israel, or abroad via the Allenby crossing to Jordan.

Jewish holiday Yom Kippur -- Hebrew for 'day of atonement'-- is a day of fasting, special prayers, and asking forgiveness for sins.
