Deteriorating Health Condition of 3 Palestinian Prisoners on Hunger Strike

ASQALAN, July 12, 2011 (WAFA) – Director of Palestinian Prisoner's Club (PPC) in Hebron, Amjad al-Najar said Tuesday that health conditions of three Palestinian prisoners who have been on a hunger strike for 30 days now in the Israeli Asqalan prison have seriously deteriorated.
According to the PPC, the prisoners: Atef Wreidat, Maisara abu-Hamdiyyeh and Yousef Skafi started their 30th day of hunger strike in face of complete rejection by the Israeli prison administration of their humanitarian requests: to move them to another prison where they can have better health care, as they suffer from several conditions including diabetes, hypertension, heart and kidney problems. Asqalan prison, where they are held, lacks any form of health care, has no appropriate medical equipment and has rampant humidity, which threatens their lives.
The PPC lawyer was able to visit the prisoners last week and stressed the deterioration in their health condition. The Israeli prison administration had inflicted more punishment on them including banning family visits, imposing monetary fines and stopping all medical checkups for all three prisoners.
PPC called on the International Red Cross to move quickly to help the prisoners and end their suffering, holding the Israeli occupation fully responsible for their lives.
The three prisoners had started an open hunger strike since June 12, 2011 in protest against the policy of medical negligence directed at them by the prison administration.
Asqalan prison has witnessed continuous repression of prisoners by the administration and its prisoners took part in a hunger strike for four straight days at the beginning of this month.
