RAMALLAH, July 11, 2011 (WAFA) – A delegation of left-wing members of the European parliament Monday announced its full support of the Palestinian bid to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
The delegation, in a meeting with the Palestinian parliamentary blocs committee, also promised to pressure the European governments to recognize the Palestinian state.
The European parliament members, after visiting Jerusalem and witnessing Israeli measures against Palestinians there, condemned the Israeli inhumane violations, especially the isolation of Jerusalem from its Palestinian environment and the continuing confiscation of Palestinian land and construction of settlements.
The Palestinian committee, which included Palestinian Legislative Council members (PLC), informed the delegation of the Israeli government’s refusal to abide by international law regarding Palestine and reiterated the importance of seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state.
The PLC members referred to the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion in 2004, which found the construction by Israel of a wall in the occupied Palestinian Territory contrary to international law, and Israeli’s continuous refusal to stop its construction, in violation of all international and human rights laws.
