GAZA, July 11 (KUNA) -- The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) called on Monday the Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu to announce his acceptance of the two-state solution if he truly seeks peace with the Palestinians.
PLO chief negotiator Saeb Eraekat told Sawt Filastin (Voice of Palestine) radio "what we want is to hear Netanyahu's acceptance of the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders and halting the building of settlements, including in Jerusalem." "We clearly want to hear those commitments from Netanyahu on accepting the two-state princilple and stopping settlements," Erekat said, and stressed," without this, according to my conviction, there is no peace partner in Israel." Last October, Palestinians halted the US-brokered negotiations with Israel due to the latter's ongoing policy towards building settlemtns.
According to Israeli media reports, the international Quartet committee is due to meet in Washington later today to discuss the possibility of outlining a new peace plan to relaunch the negotiations between the two sides and persuade Palestinians not to seek international recognition of their state.
He said that Palestinians are not pinning great hopes about the Quartet meeting, stressing that they lost their patience after 20 years of negotiations, during which all Israeli governments refused to withdraw to the 1967 boarders, and continued their policy of building more settlements, arresting Palestinians, and imposing blockades on Palestinian territories.
Erekat noted that Washington has been pressuring Israelis and Palestinians to resume peace negotiations He said Netanyahu's government mainly aims at impeding efforts toward recognizing the Palestinian state, urging the Quartet to achieve this goal. (end)
