PARIS, October 5, 2011 (WAFA) – The executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recommended on Wednesday to grant Palestine full membership in UNESCO, according to UNESCO sources.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the recommendation.
Foreign Minister Riyad Malki expressed in a statement appreciation and gratitude to all the countries that voted in favor of the recommendation.
Forty of the 58 countries on the executive board voted in favor of the recommendation, which was proposed by the Arab group in the UN organization.
Four -- the United States, Germany, Romania and Latvia -- voted against and 14, including Spain and France, abstained, the sources said.
The 193 member states of UNESCO will vote on the recommendation when the organization's General Conference convenes on October 25.
A two-thirds majority of the conference members will be needed to accept the recommendation and make Palestine a full member state.
Palestine has an observer status at UNESCO since 1974.
